Boat Tragedy Claims 21 Lives

An overloaded boat carrying 38 people capsized in the Krishna river near Vijayawada on November 12 evening, resulting in the death of 21 tourists while, the police said. Fifteen people were rescued by local fishermen. The ill-fated boat was being operated by a private company and was said to be on a trial run.

The incident occurred when the boat set off for Pavitra Sangamam at Ferry villge near Vijayawada from Bhavani Island, the police said. "The boat was overloaded with 38 people and most of them were not provided life jackets. It capsized near a curve as it approached the Pavitra Sangamam point and most of the people were trapped underneath and were killed," a police officer said.Most of the passengers were members of the Ongole Walkers Club in Prakasam district while some were from Nellore who were on a visit to Vijayawada.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N China Rajappa, Opposition leader Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, state BJP president K Hari Babu and others expressed grief over the incident. China Rajappa announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.Naidu, who also visited the scene of the accident, said the whereabouts of three crew members were not known. He said the private boat had no licence to operate.

The tourists had boarded a boat of the tourism department, but when told that the time for ferrying passengers was already over they boarded the private boat.The Chief Minister said the driver was inexperienced and unfamiliar with the area. He suddenly lost control of the overloaded boat, which capsized. The police has registered a criminal case against the boat operator. Naidu announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the dead.Terming the incident unfortunate, the Chief Minister said a committee comprising of IAS and IPS officers has been formed to prevent such incidents in future.
