TRS Corporators extort money from people

(The News Bureau)

It has been the practice of GHMC Corporators to levy private tax on any construction work taken up by the residents of Hyderabad.

The corporators threaten plot owners through the official machinery by way of creating hurdles onthe pretext of violations or some other thing. Further, the corporators and their henchmen call the plot owners through proxy numbers and threaten with dire consequences if the ‘private tax’ was not paid to them before going ahead with the construction.

But in a latest incident, TRS Corporator from Chaitanyapuri, Jinnaram Vitttal Reddy crossed all limits and physically assaulted the construction workers in Hanuman Nagar area of Chaitanyapuri as the plot owner Vikrant refused to pay the private tax.

TRS Corporator from Chaitanyapuri, Jinnaram Vittal Reddy reached the construction site in Hanuman Nagar under Chaitanyapuri police station limits on the evening of 26 along with his followers and asked the construction workers to stop the work.

When relatives of the site owner Vikrant tried to intervene, the Corporator and his followers manhandled the workers and also a relative of the site owner and threatened them with dire consequences if the work was continued without paying the private tax.

Vikrant told media persons that the Corporator had been demanding Rs 10 lakh as private tax and threatened him several times that he would stop the work if the tax levied by him was not paid.

Soon after the incident, Vikrant along with the victims reached Chaitanyapuri police station and lodged a complaint. However, police did not register the case immediately allowing the Corporator to compel the complainant withdraws the case.

But police had to register a case as the complainant insisted for FIR and also because of the pressure mounted by the media.

While this is the first incident in which police registered a case against a Corporator for demanding private tax, similar practice has been going on across the city. For instance, TRS leader Rammohan Goud from Vanasthalipuram, whose wife is a Corporator had also convened the meeting of contractors and builders in his area and demanded private tax threatening that he would make their lives miserable if his demands were not met because he would be the next MLA of LB Nagar. When news of this emerged, Municipal Administration Minister, K T Rama Rao had to reprimand Goud.

Same is the case with a woman Corporator who is allegedly collecting private tax even from scrap dealers. It appears that voters are fed up with the corrupt and illegal practices of TRS Corporators and they are only looking for next elections to give a befitting message to the TRS leaders.
