Army official held for espionage

Hyderabad, Aug 7 (The News)

An army official has been arrested by the city police for his alleged involvement in espionage activities violating the provisions of Official Secrets Act. It appears the army officer fell for honey-trap and turned traitor to his motherland.

According to Hyderabad police, Patan Kumar Poddar, Naik Subedar of EME Unit, Secunderabad (currently attached to 151, MC/MF detachment, Railway Station, Secunderabad) has been actively involved

n espionage activities. He has been arrested in liaison with military authorities and remanded to judicial custody.

A woman, who appears to be a Pakistani National, contacted Poddar through facebook and subsequently email and developed online friendship. Over a period she lured him into sharing vital information such as strategic locations of army bases, deployment of some defense units, police sources said.

Poddar spoke to various army personnel of different locations to gather information with regard to location of artillery regiments, commands, corps, division headquarters and brigades. He shared all the information with his online friend violating the Official Secrets Act and which is against the interest of the nation, police said.

Further, Poddar is actively involved in network marketing business for a company named ‘Secured Life’. His posting at the railway station came in very handy for the accused as army personnel from different parts of th

he country came into his contact mainly for train reservation. Being a Government servant he is not only doing the business of Money circulation Schemes but also luring his colleagues to join in the said business.
