Delhi slum free in 5 years: Naidu

The News Bureau, Jan 8

Minister for Urban Development (MUD) M Venkaiah Naidu has decided to make Delhi slum free to improve the living standards of people. All the 685 slum clusters would be taken up for redevelopment in five years.

At a meeting convened by Venkaiah Naidu all secretaries of MUD, chief executive of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board and others attended the meeting. He said Delhi needs to be made slum-free to enable seamles

urban development.

Earlier attempts for redevelopment of clusters could not progress due to lack of guidelines besides vested interests seeking to subvert such attempts.

It was decided that guidelines would be evolved in a week by the Central and Delhi governments. Redevelopment of clusters would be considered based on the models followed in Gujarat, Mumbai and Chennai.

Government’s policy seeks to enhance population density of 900 persons per hectare through construction of Ground + 13 units. This would entail construction of about 3 lakh houses in 320 hectares. About 55,000 houses are at various stages of construction taken up under JNNURM.
