Organ donation saves 5 patients

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, declared Ram Bhuj, 24, brain dead on January 2, after he did not respond to the treatment. But his organs were donated which saved the lives of five people.

Youth’s family was given the choice to donate the organs. Ram’s liver was divided into two parts. Surgeons at Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences transplanted one part into a paediatric patient

epartment while an adult received another.

AIIMS doctors removed the liver, heart, kidneys and corneas from Ram’s  body. Cardiac specialist transplanted the heart into a child’s body while the kidneys saved the lives of two other patients.

Further, interestingly the victim’s corneas were stocked by the ophthalmology centre. Due to scarcity of organs nearly five lakh die every year, according to health ministry. Ram sustained an accident on December 30.
