Railways will not be privatized: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared categorically that Indian Railways would not be privatized. He was addressing a gathering in Varanasi after the commencement of expansion of the Diesel Locomotive Works. He asserted that his aim was aimed at ensuring modernization of railways through private investment.

Public funds are the property of the poor and should be used to fulfil their basic needs including hea

th and education, he said. Railways would be service-oriented so that it could become an engine of growth, said the pm. 

Modi said four rail universities would be established to ensure trained human resource. Railways should not be seen as a means of transport but it should become the backbone of economic development. He exhorted railmen to see that best service is provided. 

The prime minister, who earlier flagged off the new high horsepower diesel locomotive, described this as an indigenous capability and an illustration of Make in India. He recalled former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri`s slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan," which inspired farmers.

Postal and railway networks could be leveraged to become drivers of rural development. Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu was also present on the occasion.
