Raise watershed schemes for farmers’

Minister for Rural Development Birender Singh has called for small watershed schemes to promote agriculture.

He said effective implementation of the watershed schemes has the potential to fight poverty and reduce imbalances between the poor and the rich. Centre and States should jointly promote water conservation programmes.

Singh stressed on development of rainfed areas which is the prime concern of the present government and

uggested for increased investments and use of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems in watershed management.

He urged to enhance community participation at every stage of project implementation and maintenance of assets created. The minister emphasized on de-silting of water harvesting structures in advance for monsoon in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of “Har Khet ko Pani”. 

Minister of State for Rural Development Sudarshan Bhagat called for participation of women and weaker sections as part of the water conservation schemes. He also laid stress on storage of water in mining pits for irrigation and drinking purposes.
