Minister of Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu explained how smart city benefits the common man. Out of 30 smart cities announced, 26 have proposed housing projects benefiting the poor while taking up school, smart road projects besides enabling cycling and walking.

It is a huge distortion of facts to say that area based development benefits only people of that area. It w

ll certainly benefit other citizens as well in several ways, the minister clarified. Smart city development is based on the shared vision of citizens and respective city governments and not imposed by the central government.

All the 30 cities will develop Integrated Command and Control Centres to enable coordination among city agencies for better services and effective management of water and Power.

He made clear that smart city projects are not mere real estate projects and meant for just cosmetic changes. Command and Control Centres of Pune and Nagpur will be operational on June 25.

Naidu rebutted the criticism that smart city mission is only a playground for global technology players. Guidelines have prescribed that less than 25% of the cost of smart city plan will be spent on technology. He complimented the State Governments for rising to the occasion to enable the much de

esired urban transformation.
